FAQ

  • Why meet with a spiritual director?  Some of us long to connect more deeply with God but are not sure how to make the connection. A spiritual director accompanies us as we discover for ourselves where God is present in our lives and where that presence is guiding us.
  • What do people talk about in spiritual direction? The conversations are as varied as the individuals seeking spiritual direction. Some people are seeking deeper meaning for their lives and seek a companion for the journey. Others have had a significant spiritual experience they want to unpack in a safe space. Some people may have important decisions or choices to make and seek assistance through prayer. Still others may feel as if their relationship with God is stagnant and want to bring new life into their walk with God. A spiritual director listens intently to what each individual brings as well as to the promptings of the ever present Spirit.

  • How is spiritual direction different from therapy or pastoral counseling?  Spiritual direction is not psychotherapy or pastoral counseling. A spiritual director is not a psychotherapist  – unless you encounter one who happens to be trained in both areas – so we are not trained to diagnose an individual’s problems.  Usually, pastoral counseling is a short-term resource that addresses a specific problem an individual needs help to resolve. A spiritual director seeks to keep our attention focused on God, spiritual discernment and our relationship with God, self and others. While spiritual direction may compliment the psychotherapy a person is receiving, it is never a replacement for therapy.
  • How often do I meet with a spiritual director? During the initial time together, a spiritual director may want to meet about two times a month for the first couple of months in order to establish a relationship. After the initial time together,  once a month is a good practice for keeping focused. However, each spiritual direction relationship is unique and can be adjusted to meet the needs of the person seeking spiritual direction.
  • Where do we meet?  If you are in the Rincon, Georgia, area we meet in the St. Julian room of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 155 Goshen Road, Rincon, Georgia. Because of today’s wonderful technology, we are no longer limited to meeting in person based on our geographical area.  We can also meet on the phone or via Skype or Zoom. These options are suggestions and can be adapted as needed.
  • What if I am not the right spiritual director for you?  No problem! Not every spiritual director is right for every person – think about teachers, ministers, or health care professionals. You need a person with whom you feel a safe connection for this sacred relationship. Spiritual direction is about freedom and growth for your particular path. We will discern together if we are a fit for each other.
  • Are there fees associated with spiritual direction? Yes, there is a fee for spiritual direction with me. Each approximately one hour session is $60.
